Kirtinagar city on the banks of River Alaknanda belongs to Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. It is sited at a distance of 36 km away from its district Headquarters Tehri, 19 km away from its Tehsil Headquarters Deoprayag, 79 km away from its state capital Dehradun and 347 km away from the national capital Delhi. The city is one of the 12 major towns in Tehri Garhwal district.

About Kirtinagar

The city was founded by the Raja of Garhwal named Kirti Shah in the year 1894 after whom the city is named. The name reason for the formation of the city is to avoid major floods caused by River Alaknanda. The city homes a popular temple name Dhuund Pryaag close to the banks of River Alaknanda.

People of all disciplines reside in the city who speaks Hindi and Urdu. The city has no notable industrial development in its grounds for the reason why it comes under most backward industrial development regions of Uttarakhand. The city records a total population of 1517 as per 2011 population census. The city is popular for its Kirtinagar market in its neighborhood.

The city is sited on the banks of River Alaknanda which flows through the bottom curve of the city forming its southern boundary. Summers are hot and winters are cool in the city.

Kitinagar is one of the two sub divisions in Tehri Garhwal district apart from Tehri- Pratap Nagar. The Kirtinagar sub division has got about 20 villages under its jurisdiction. Kirtinagar Nagar Panchayat belongs to Deoprayag Tehsil or Sub district of Tehri Garhwal which is one of the seven Tehsils in its district. Each of these Tehsils is again sub divided into development block. The district has a total of nine development block which included Kirtinagar under Deoprayag Tehsil.  Kirtinagar is also one of the four town area committees in Tehri Garhwal apart from Chamba, Deoprayag and Muni Ki Reti.

The city belongs to Tehri Garhwal Lok Saba Constituency and the current MP of the constituency is Smt. Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah who won her consecutive second win from the same constituency to the Indian Parliament in the year 2012 bye-election and 2014 central election.
